Mrs Beeton's Homeopathic Hints

Homeopathic treatment of diseases according to Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management first printed in 1861. These tips still hold good today for common or garden problems in the home. The current editions of Mrs Beeton's book do not contain this information and instead firmly refer you to the doctor for the appropriate medication! In her preface Mrs Beeton refers to "A great Physician" who contributed to the medical section of her book. As a well experienced Homeopath and lecturer for 15 years in Homeopathy I can say that everything listed below is completely in accordance with what is taught in colleges of Homeopathy today. On a practical level the advice and suggestions given below are completely in accordance with the treatment and advice I have been giving for more than 20 years. How refreshing it is to find that Homeopathy does not change - has been, and always will be - a reliable source of help to those who want to learn, know and help their fellow man.Nowadays it is more likely that you would be advised to use the 6c or 30c potency (strength) remedy. Good Homeopathic Pharmacists (see links Helios pharmacy, Brauer pharmacy) will provide the potencies described by Mrs Beeton but I have used all these medicines over the years in the 6th or 30th potency with equally good results.Where drops are mentioned as the mode of delivery of the remedy -pillules are just as effective and may also be crushed and put in water in the same way. Here is her advice given alphabetically:

Appetite, Failure of

For loss of appetite accompanied by constipation of the bowels ,pain in the stomach after eating, with broken and unrefreshing sleep, NUX VOMICA is needed which may be taken in alternation with SULPHUR every 3 hours. For simple loss of appetite CHINA mother tincture 2 or 3 drops before meals is helpful.

Abcess and Boils

In the early stages BELLADONNA 1x a drop every hour sometimes cuts it short. If it fails SILICA 6 x 3 a day Especially useful for abcesses near the anus. For recurrent boils or abcesses HEPAR SULPH 30 a drop x 1 a day or SILICA 30 in the same way.

For the asthmatic paroxysms the medicines most often required are ARSENICUM IPECACUANHA or ANTIMONIUM TARTARICUM. With ARSENICUM there is great anguish of mind and restlessness and the attacks are worse after midnight. With IPECACUANHA there is wheezing and rattling of mucus and the cough causes gagging and vomiting. If IPECACUANHA fails ANTIMONIUM TARTARICUM should be substituted, especially if there is blueness of the lips and cold sweat. If the mucus is very viscid (thick and sticky) LOBELIA 3x may be indicated. If the attacks are accompanied by gastric disturbance and worse after eating NUX VOMICA is called for. In each case, repeat every 1/2 hour till relief is obtained. For the cure of Asthmatic tendency PSORINUM 30 or 200 is often useful given in infrequent doses once a week only. Similarly for asthma worse for cold and damp weather NAT SULPH 6, a dose daily and for those which are better in damp weather HEPAR SULPH 30 a dose every 4 days may act curatively.

For an ordinary bilious attack which frequently follows indulgence in what is called good eating and drinking ,and is often the outcome of sedentary occupations ,the usual remedies are MERCURIUS and NUX VOMICA in alternation every 2 hours until relief is obtained. PULSATILLA is prescribed for persons of fair complexion, especially women, instead of NUX VOMICA.The ordinary symptoms of such an attack are a foul tongue with nausea and frequently actual vomiting. For bilious attacks which occur at more or less regular intervals independently of errors in diet IRIS 2x 1 or 2 drops x3 a day.
